BIOGRAPHY
Harold F. Balls
Harold F. Balls was born Jan. 21 1918 to William H. and Catherine Farrell Balls. His father was the Rye police chief. Harold had five brothers and six sisters. In Rye his family lived at
18 Cedar Pl
and were members of the Church of the Resurrection.
Harold graduated from Rye High School where he was captain of the football team and was named an all-county player. He played semi- proffesional football as a fullback in a league that operatedin the Long Island Sound area.
Harold enlisted and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a master sergeant in the U.S. Army during WWII and served in the South Pacific with the
27th Infantry Division.
Harold's 27th Division would participate in several major battles including
the Battle of Saipan
and
the Battle of Okinawa
.
He worked for Pray Volkswagen in Greenwich for 14 years and as a Buick dealer in Rye. Harold was also a salesman at Toyota of Green
wich Conn for many years.
Harold Balls was a volunteer fireman in Rye for 50 years and served as cheif from 1954 to 1960. He belonged to the Portchester Old Timers Association which honored him in 1978 as its Man of the Year. He was also a member of the Ex-Fire Chiefs Assocation of Rye and Port Chester.
Harold was an avid golfer. He was very generous with his time trying to teach and engourage young golfers at Rye Golf Club. He seemed to always have a smile and was quick with a joke or a wisecrack. With his pencil mustache, he reminded many of Clark Gable.
Harold was general chairman of the William H. Balls Community Field Day, an annual Labor Day event in Rye for over 20 years. He married Agnes Patricia Graham in 1985, retired and moved to Florida.
Harold Farrell Balls a retired car salesman and former Rye fire chief died Thursday October 28, 1987 at his home in Nokomiss Fla. after a brief illness He was 69.
